Love her or hate her, if you played Borderlands 3, you know who Ava is. She is the bratty teen that Maya from Borderlands 2 takes under her wing to teach about Siren abilities. Unfortunately, if you know Ava, you also know how horrible her character was, and how many didn’t feel like they could connect with her. Instead of being a grateful character, who could have been worthy of receiving Maya’s powers, she remained a bratty kid, who many believed shouldn’t have made it to the end of Borderlands 3. Universally, the fanbase pretty much hates her, which is why it is odd to discover that Ava could have been in Borderlands 4.

Datamine Discovers Previous Role for Ava in Borderlands 4

As posted by popular Borderlands content creator EpicNNG on X, “Ava was cut from Borderlands 4.” The post states, “There are numerous files related to her in the game, more specifically outlining that she was completely replaced by Amara late in development.” Not only was Ava supposed to have Amara’s role, but “she was also going to be accompanied by Hermes, and be hanging out around Sanctuary 3,” at least the remains of its wreckage found in Terminus Range.

Alright I guess we're gonna talk about it:

AVA WAS CUT FROM BORDERLANDS 4

As part of the post, the user included an image showing a list of file commands. These include titles such as “AvaBubble.uasset” and “RescueZaneAndAva_Start.uasset,” showing that Ava was meant to be heavily involved in the story. One moment of the Borderlands 4 story did stick out to many, and it is when Amara uses the same style of protective bubble that Ava used in Borderlands 3.

EpicNNG’s post also states, “It would appear everything aside from references has been completely scrubbed, including audio files, models, and more.” Many pointed out that it is rather odd that Amara is with Hermes in Borderlands 4, considering it is Ava’s pet from the third game. With Ava gone, many think that she could return in DLC, but there are still many who would rather have her deleted from the series altogether.
