Many have noticed that Call of Duty has been on a downward trend. This year, Activision released Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, and it quickly got hit by harsh reviews from the public, with some even labeling the campaign as “abysmal dogshit.” This came after many realized the issues with the campaign, such as the internet requirement, lack of checkpoints, and poor writing. Now, Activision has announced that it will be making a major change to its release schedule for Call of Duty going forward, and it is something fans have been asking the company to do for a while.
Call of Duty Black Ops and Modern Warfare Releases are Changing
Activision released a blog post yesterday about the state of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. For starters, next week, Black Ops 7 will be free-to-play, and Activision will be activating a double XP weekend. Second, the company stated it is listening to community feedback to shape its season updates. Players can expect to get a year’s worth of the latest Call of Duty title with consistent updates.
Of course, these announcements pale in comparison to the final one on the blog post that says Activision is changing its release strategy going forward. “We will no longer do back-to-back releases of Modern Warfare or Black Ops games. The reasons are many, but the main one is to ensure we provide an absolutely unique experience each and every year.”
In other words, we can’t expect to see Black Ops 8 next year, and instead, we will be getting Modern Warfare 4. The post goes on to say, “We will drive innovation that is meaningful, not incremental. While we aren’t sharing those plans today, we look forward to doing so when the time is right.”
This change, of course, comes after harsh criticism of Activision for releasing Black Ops 7 immediately following Black Ops 6 was released in 2024, Black Ops 7 receiving many negative comments from fans, and Battlefield 6 showing it is a strong competitor once more. It appears as though a combination of all of this has finally brought a change of mind to those at Activision.
