Astro Bot, a callback to classic 3D platforming gaming mixed with various other genres, made a big splash earlier this year. With a 94% on Metacritic, a 4.9/5 on PlayStation, and high remarks from various reviewers, the game with Sony’s adorable mascot showed that players love a solid platforming experience. The love for Astro Bot continues to be seen months later with it sweeping the competition for most Game Awards nominations. So what all did it get nominated for and are there any games that come close to matching it?
The Game Awards announced the nominations for its various awards from Game of the Year, Best Narrative, and Best Ongoing to Best Action Game, Best RPG, and more. There’s a total of 29 awards with only 24 being able to be grabbed by games released this year. PlayStation titles have been nominated for many of these categories which is surprising considering the downfall of games such as Concord earlier this year. Of these categories, Astro Bot was nominated for seven of them – the most of any single game this year.
Overall, Astro Bot was nominated for Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Score and Music, Best Audio Design, Best Action/Adventure Game, and Best Family Game. The number of nominations beat out Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Black Myth: Wukong, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, and Metaphor Refantazio. Metaphor and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth tied for the second most nominations with both receiving a total of six.
PlayStation is sitting strong this year with a total of 16 nominations across the various categories. Of course, with Astro Bot leading the charge at the Game Awards, it might be a tough fight. We will just need to wait and see what happens and how many wins the spunky little robot gets this year. We don’t think it will win Game of the Year but crazier things have happened.
