What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of your favorite video game console? For the most part, you likely jump to your favorite games or the memories you have playing those games. That being said, a console with a memorable startup sound can supplant itself in your psyche forever. Here are the five best console startup sounds ever.
Top 5 console startup sounds
5. Game Boy Advance
The lone handheld representative on our list, the Game Boy Advance was a massive leap forward in many ways from the long-running original Game Boy. The best way to show that big leap in power was to make the words Game Boy jump onto the screen with great animation and show far more personality than the basic ding its predecessor had.
4. PlayStation 2
The PlayStation 2 has been the top-selling console of all time for so long due to a lot of great decisions. It had a DVD player built-in, the game library was amazing, and the startup sound was memorable. Once you launch this console, you get to see a bunch of towers that denote the save files stored on the memory card that’s currently plugged in. If you have a game ready to go, you then dive into that data and are off on your next adventure. Let’s ignore the red screen that scared so many of us when the disc was too scratched to play.
3. Xbox 360
The Xbox 360 had a couple of different startup sounds, but it’s the latter one that sticks out in our mind the most. This new version made its debut around when the Kinect launched, giving us at least one good thing about that accessory. A trail of green dances around the logo before entering the iconic Xbox sphere. The original is nostalgic for those early days, but this one is much better quality and is what we think of first when you ask us to describe the Xbox 360 startup.
2. Nintendo GameCube
Is there a better way to describe the pure joy of launching a Nintendo game than listening to the GameCube console startup sound? A purple cube dances around, creating the system’s logo with yet another short, addicting tune from Nintendo. Bonus points to those that knew you could change the sound by holding the Z button on start on one controller, or having four controllers plugged in and all holding the Z button on start.
1. PlayStation
There was no other contender for the number one best console startup sound. The original PlayStation made its impact known and planted its flag immediately by conveying power with its mysterious ambiance. The reverberating bass accompanied by chimes is such a unique sound that just oozes nostalgia overload for many. The console was powering up, ready to take you on a wild ride. It doesn’t matter if you were a Nintendo or Sega kid growing up, if you were a gamer in the 90s, you likely still get goosebumps when hearing this sound.
