Have you gotten the incompatible version error in Baldur’s Gate 3? This error appears on your save files when you try to load up your previous saves. This, unfortunately, prevents you from being able to load your game and continue your playthrough. Those who have experienced this issue have typically lost hours and hours of gameplay.
The reason why you are experiencing this issue is due to the game thinking your save is on a different version of the game. That’s because it technically is. We will go into this in greater detail below. So what is the ‘incompatible version’ error in Baldur’s Gate 3 and can it be fixed?
Can you fix the ‘incompatible version’ error in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. At this time, there is no fix for the incompatible version error or the incompatible save error. Larian Studios introduced Hotfix #4. The reason why you are getting this error is that it applies to any save that was made while the hotfix was out. The Hotfix was out for a while before Larian Studios realized it caused issues.

Once the developers realized that the hotfix was an issue, it decided to roll it back. This means that the developers disabled the hotfix in the game so any save created during that time is on a different version of the game. It also means that those saves cannot be loaded until Baldur’s Gate 3 is reset back to the version those saves were created on.
This is very unfortunate for those who are affected and hopefully, they didn’t lose too much save data. If a fix is released for the issue, we will update this article to reflect that. For now, all of the saves that are incompatible will appear in faded text under your save files. You will not be able to load them back up until the issue is fixed and will instead need to load the last compatible save file.
