Elden Ring is full of seemingly impossible challenges and difficult foes. If you thought the base game was tough, you might think the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is even tougher. One of the many bosses you can find in the Elden Ring DLC is the Evergaol Knight. He is one of the first optional bosses you can locate in the Realm of Shadow. If you aren’t careful, however, you can easily fall victim to his heavy attacks and wind slashes. Keep your guard up and don’t falter. Here is how to defeat the Evergaol Knight in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree.
Where to find the Evergaol Knight in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree
Before you can face off against the Evergaol Knight, you first need to locate him. After interacting with the Cocoon of the Empyrean in Mohg’s boss arena, you will be taken to the Realm of Shadow. From there, head north and follow the western wall. This will lead you to the Western Nameless Mausoleum. You can also reach this area by heading west from the Scorched Ruins Site of Grace.

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Evergaol Knight boss guide
Now that you have found the boss, let’s work on defeating him. The Evergaol Knight moves fast despite his heavy armor and can hit extremely hard. With 40 Vigor, we were lucky to survive a single hit from him. Some of his attacks were even able to one-shot our character so be on your guard. The boss has the following attacks:
Attack | Description | How to dodge |
---|---|---|
Horizontal Slash | The boss horizontally swings his blade. This can be done both one-handed and two-handed. | Dodge into the attack |
Vertical Slash | The boss swings his blade down. This can be done both one-handed and two-handed. | Dodge into the attack |
Solitary Moon Slash | The boss swings his weapon down, creating an air slash that launches out of the blade. This can be followed up by a heavy spinning slash. | Dodge to the left or right and dodge into the attack if there is a follow-up |
Crossbow Shot | The boss shoots his crossbow. This can also be done in rapid succession. | Run/dodge to the left or right until the arrows stop |

The Evergaol Knight can be very difficult to defeat. His high armor rating makes him difficult to stagger but it can be done if you are using heavy weapons. We relied on Marika’s Hammer during the fight which helped us stun him and get some extra hits in. After an attack, the Evergaol Knight will take a moment before attacking again, use this opening to attack once, and prepare for him to retaliate. Don’t get greedy with your attacks or you will suffer for it. Take the fight slowly and be methodical. When the Evergaol Knight reaches half health, he will attempt to use a healing flask. This is a great opportunity to stun him repeatedly if you are using a weapon weapon. We were able to get multiple hits in with heavy attacks before he had a chance to heal which helped us tremendously.
