The Legend of Zelda games have been a Nintendo staple in the industry since 1986. Since then, various iterations of Link have been on memorable adventures, slaying countless foes and collecting as many rupees as possible. Over the decades since the original game’s release, just about everyone has a favorite game and story within this series. With the IP finally making its way to theaters, is The Legend of Zelda Movie based on a game?
What game is The Legend of Zelda Movie based on?
Unfortunately, we don’t know for sure if The Legend of Zelda Movie is based on one of the games at this point or if it is a totally original story. In fact, there is very little we know about the movie at this point. We know who the director for the project is, but other plans for it have been tightly held to Nintendo and Sony’s chest since the announcement. Hopefully, we can start getting some details sooner rather than later.
Speaking speculatively, we imagine that The Legend of Zelda Movie will be a completely original story. Of course, we could be proven wrong about that in the future, but if we look at how The Super Mario Bros. Movie was handled, a lot of new elements and story were added to that world to make it work for cinema. That isn’t to say that the Zelda series hasn’t had its cinematic moments, but with it being a video game, the producers may look to make something unique that doesn’t rely on popular titles of the series’ past.
We can’t really imagine something like Wind Waker’s cartoon style being made into a live-action movie, so that seems completely off the table. Even Ocarina of Time switching between Link’s age would make things more of a hassle than necessary. Twilight Princess turning him into a wolf would call for a lot of CGI. If the movie does end up being based on a game, the top candidates are likely A Link to the Past or Breath of the Wild.
