John Cena’s contribution to Overwatch 2 is now official. He is the voice and personality behind the new character Enigma. Seeing a person like John Cena connected to Overwatch might be a little confusing for some. With that in mind, here is some background on why John Cena is attached to the game and who the Enigma character is.
Why is John Cena in Overwatch 2?
John Cena’s Enigma character is here to promote the new Overwatch 2: Invasion content that releases next week. With the first batch of story missions to be added to the game, Blizzard and the community are rightly excited. Activision seems to have paid the big bucks to bring a well-known celebrity to promote the game. This is similar to how they handled the release of Diablo 4 earlier this year when Megan Fox was attached.
As we reported earlier in the week, there had been plenty of clues to Enigma’s true identity. Large Overwatch streamers had been getting their streams interrupted with various videos and messages, with many clues pointing to Cena. While you can say that Enigma is part of the Overwatch universe, the character does not appear in the game, at least as of this writing. John Cena’s performance is seen in a few videos promoting the update.
Who is Enigma in Overwatch 2?
While Blizzard is very good at filling in the background of its characters in Overwatch, Enigma doesn’t have any of that yet. All we know about him is that he is a hacker who seems to have been connected to Overwatch before it was disbanded with the Petras Act. The room we see him in has Overwatch icons all over it, a now-retired loot box, weapons belonging to Tracer, Brigitte, Sojourn, and a smaller version of Reinhardt’s hammer. How he got Brig’s flail even though she was never a member of Overwatch is a question for another day.
While Sombra is the person you think of when it comes to hacking, Enigma seems to be on the good side. He is taking the chance to try and spread Winston’s recall to bring heroes out of hiding to fight Null Sector. Sombra is a great character, but she is working for Talon, who has teamed up with Null Sector to attack cities around the globe. Hopefully, Blizzard will bring back Enigma in the future. Whether that is letting Cena voice the character to give directions to players in gameplay or just mentions of him, we would be happy to learn more about him.
