Peak is one of those indie games that took the gaming community by storm, with many streamers immediately taking to the game and enjoying every last minute of its hilarious gameplay loop of climbing to the top of a mysterious mountain. Of course, the game has not been without its criticisms, with some claiming the game was made using generative AI back in 2025. This was later rebutted by the developer. Now, Landfall games has faced criticism once more, with one user claiming the game is “lazy.”
Landfall Games Responds to “Lazy” Criticism
When Peak launched in 2025, it was met with almost instant success, selling over 5 million copies within the first month of its release. To date, the game has sold over 10 million copies – a substantial feat for any developer. Currently, one of the developers, Aggro Crab, is working on a new project called Crashout Crew.
Recently, Peak was criticized, with the user stating the game has a “lazy dev cycle,” and that the team “could be doing so much more with it.” To date, Peak has received multiple updates which have added new biomes, enemies, and more. The most recent update added the ability to customize runs. The user demanded more, saying that there should be an update “that actually makes sense,” and that full customization is in order.
Developer Landfall Games was quick to respond, with a post saying, “Peak has had sooo many updates tho! Neither us or Aggro Crab are live service studios, any update is a bonus not a right.” In a separate response, the developer stated, “We just made a huge update for customising runs, but full customisation is a big ask. However if there are specific suggestions we’d love to hear them. Re modding we have a great connection with the modding community, when asking if we should add workshop etc. they didn’t want it.”
It is easy to see where the developer is coming from, as most indie studios do not have the capability to place all their focus on one game. Many expect smaller developers to deliver updates at the rate of triple-A studios, which just isn’t feasible. Peak is not the first indie game to receive this time of criticism, with many criticizing games like Phasmophobia, Lethal Company, and Repo. The Peak developer did state that the game will receive “at least one more” update before the team shifts focus to future projects.
