“Oppression!” Many have started screaming this word across X thanks to one of the latest announcements from the Marvel Rivals team, NetEase. Others are complaining that their information will be stolen. Either way, this isn’t a good look. Why is this happening? It is because NetEase announced that it will be monitoring the in-game chat of Marvel Rivals, allowing the team to bring down the ban hammer on those who use racial slurs. Their goal is to make “the game a better place for everyone.” Not everyone sees it that way, however.
Marvel Rivals Voice Chat Will Be Monitored
NetEase announced the change to the Marvel Rivals in-game voice chat with the season 3.5 update video released on the Marvel Rivals X page. The video showcased “Operation: Shield the Community.” During this segment, creative director Guangguang stated, “Great teamwork starts with great communication. To keep Marvel Rivals a positive experience for all, we’re upgrading our in-game environment.” He then went on to say, “In addition to player reports and manual review, all in-game voice chat will now be automatically screened by the system with human review. This means we’ll catch more toxic behaviour, and players using inappropriate language will be penalized.”
Many immediately questioned what the creative director meant by this new form of censorship, with some questioning what else it could be used for. Some stated that it could be used to listen to conversations and steal data, while others are concerned that this might be a step too far for censorship. Some said that players should just mute those whom they don’t want to listen to.
Others simply stated that there shouldn’t be a need for this tech because players should know how to act in a team-based game such as Marvel Rivals. It is clear that NetEase is treading in some rather turbulent waters, and not everyone is convinced this will be used for the right reasons.
