The next hero joining Overwatch 2’s roster in Season 16 is Freja, and, while we still have yet to play her (her play trial is this weekend), we get to see her in action in a new teaser video posted on the game’s YouTube channel called “The Hunt Begins.” Freja meets up with Maximillien, the well-known crime syndicate omnic, as she turns in some bounties, and we get a look at her next target, Emre, who has been teased since 2016.
What happens in The Hunt Begins?
At its core, The Hunt Begins is a way for Freja to show off her abilities. She was revealed a month ago during the Overwatch Spotlight stream, so none of her crossbow and bolas reveals were a surprise. In universe, Freja used to be a member of Overwatch, but following the organization’s disbandment, she became a bounty hunter. In this video, Freja has tracked down and caught three high priority bounties in a short time, as well as stolen some supplies from Max following a missed payment for her services.
When confronted by Max’s guards, Freja makes short work of the henchmen, and blows up Max’s car to boot.We then learn that all of this was planned out by Max, who is testing the hero to see if she can hunt down someone she presumably has experience with, Emre. She accepts the job and now it appears we actually have a timeline for Emre to possibly be added to the game.
For those who don’t know, Emre Sarioglu is a character that has been referenced multiple times over the years. His first appearance was in Ana’s origin trailer in 2016, the same year the original Overwatch released. He was an Overwatch agent who played a big role in many missions, including the rescue and recruitment of Genji into the team following his near fatal experience with Hanzo.
As of now, the only other hero we know for sure to be coming is Aqua, who is the Season 18 addition. Emre is likely still a ways off, but this is the first tangible evidence we have had that Emre is still active and could be a viable addition to the game.
