While we haven’t gotten the full patch notes yet, the official Baldur’s Gate 3 X account has started teasing some of the fixes and changes in the upcoming update. While there are some nice things, like easier ways to switch out your companions and lessening their outburst dialogues, the highlight to us is a couple of abilities being fixed. Soon, Shield Bash and Rebuke of the Mighty will work properly in Baldur’s Gate 3 again.
While they have quite different names, these abilities work similarly to each other, which is why it’s easy to see how they both have the same issue. If one of your party members has a shield that gives them one of these abilities, they can use their reaction after an enemy lands a melee attack on them. If the enemy fails a dexterity saving throw, you deal some damage and knock them prone. Unfortunately, at the moment when you activate the ability, the animation will play, but no saving throw happens for the opponent, so the damage and effect don’t work.

From what we have found, people have been reporting this issue on various social media posts since early November, so what could be a useful ability has been unusable for quite some time. We recently noticed this bug after giving Shadowheart a Shield of Devotion that gives this ability. Like many others, when we use the reaction, she swings the shield, but no saving throw happens, and no effect takes place.
It’s unfortunate that it took so long for Shield Bash and Rebuke of the Mighty to be fixed in Baldur’s Gate 3, but at least they should be back in play soon. We don’t know when exactly the update will be available, but we imagine sooner rather than later. There are still plenty of other things to be revealed whenever the full patch notes are out, as the update will be 21 GB in size.
