If you have been playing Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, you have probably noticed the movement feels a bit off compared to previous titles, and we are not talking about omnimovement. Instead, we are talking about basic movements such as crouching and going prone. You may have noticed that while these movements seem more realistic, they also appear “slow and clunky.” At least, that is what one popular YouTuber had to say. Matt Scronce, associate director of design, stepped in to clarify why the Black Ops 6 movement feels so different compared to previous titles like MW2019.
TCaptainX on X posted a movement caparison video from TikTok created ByeFredo. The video shows the difference in movement between 2019’s Modern Warfare and Black Ops 6. Based on the video TCaptainX stated, “I actually didn’t realize how slow and clunky some of these basic movements are compared to MW19.” He went on to say, “I love Omni movement, but what’s the point if all the core movement mechanics are super slow and cause absurd weapon sway? Call of duty is not a mil-sim. Every attempt to become more realistic has resulted in lower player counts.”
In response, Matt Scronce – one of the developers on Black Ops 6, stated, “Once prone and crouch speeds become too fast, you end up with a mismatch between 1st and 3rd person POV leading to “snaking” which has been a massive problem in the past. Faster is not always healthier for the overall game experience. I’ve never personally been a fan of spamming jump during combat, so when we intentionally designed omnimovement mechanics, we adjusted sway/bob when jumping by default to ensure that wasn’t the most effective tactic during engagements. If you want to spam jump while shooting, we have Perks and Attachments to increase effectiveness just like we do for slide and dive.”
Some have stated that this comment proves how Treyarch is better than Ubisoft and have said that this is the reason XDefiant has been failing. The fast movement of the game has led to many being able to use jumping and ‘snaking’ as the most viable tactics in every encounter. As Matt Scronce said, “Faster is not always healthier for the overall game experience.” Of course, many have also stated that this tactic was used in a previous title as well and it nearly killed the franchise.
