Earlier today, Electronic Arts canceled its Black Panther game that has been in production for a few years and closed down the development studio Cliffhanger Games, resulting in hundreds of layoffs. While we knew next to nothing about the game when it got the axe, some concept art for the game has leaked and revealed some elements of the game, including skrulls serving as antagonists. You can view the images below.

Those who participated in a survey were shown a scene where T'challa's son Azari (one of multiple playable characters) was fighting T'challa in ritual combat in a scene VERY similar to the film.

It was interrupted by a Skrull ship coming down and T'challa being taken. https://t.co/lNllhiu4VI pic.twitter.com/Zr55lvO3BL

Skrulls were the main antagonists in the Black Panther game?

Supposedly, according to this concept art, the main protagonist of the game would have been Azari, the son of T’Challa and Storm in the comics. It appears that father and son face off in a ritual battle before the skrulls come in and take T’Challa away. Without knowing more specifics, we wonder if the fight they were having would have been a passing of the torch kind of situation as Azari takes on the Black Panther mantle. We don’t know for sure if the skrulls were the main antagonists, but them taking away T’Challa feels like the main bad guy kind of move.

Regardless of the circumstances, it sounds like Azari would not have been the only playable protagonist. T’Challa, Shuri, Killmonger, and M’Baku are other names we have heard referenced to at least be planned to be playable at some point. With this being a single player game, we’re not sure if this was a situation where you would choose one character and follow their story or if you would regularly hop between playable characters. It would appear to us that all the concept art seems to show Azari as the Black Panther, but we can’t be 100% sure about that.

As more information comes out on the Black Panther game, it seems that things were rather all over the place while in development. The skrulls seemingly being the main antagonist is certainly a decision instead of choosing a Black Panther villain. Hopefully, we will get more clarity on the situation in the coming days and learn more about what exactly was going wrong.
