Concord is the latest hero-shooter game similar to Overwatch and Marvel Rivals. The only difference is that it features a ragtag group of otherworldly bounty hunters called Free Gunners. This in itself is somewhat reminiscent of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Unfortunately, it does not look like the Free Gunners were as popular as the original outer space misfits as the launch day player count for Concord was surprisingly low. This does not bode well for PlayStation’s hero shooter and the future of the game is currently looking pretty bleak.
Concord had two beta weekends leading up to its launch on both PlayStation and Steam. During this time, the highest player count the game received on Steam during the beta was about 2,600 players. For context, Marvel Rivals saw a peak player count of around 52,000 on Steam during its closed beta. In comparison, players are far more interested in the upcoming Marvel hero-shooter than they are in Concord.
Fast Forward to the release date for Concord; August 23, 2024. Despite some decent feedback from the beta, the Steam player count was shockingly low. On launch day, the player count reached a max of only 697 players. While it was close, the player count didn’t even crack 700 on launch day. This does not look good for the hero shooter and many are echoing back to the beta saying the game is dead on arrival.
Players shared their thoughts about the game’s low player count on Reddit in a post created by eggfeverbadass. One user commented on the player count saying, “No one is paying $40 for a live service game that is just a clone of Overwatch but has Marvel quips.” Another user commented, “The game failed because it’s the millionth hero shooter and people are sick of them. This one doesn’t do anything different or remotely interesting that sets it apart from the others.”
That’s right, many are saying the game is bland, boring, and tasteless and they aren’t surprised it is failing. While we don’t know the PlayStation player count, it looks like Concord is destined to fail based on the Steam numbers alone.
