Jason Blundell, the former lead on Call of Duty Zombies at Treyarch for years, says he has started up a new first-party studio for PlayStation called Dark Outlaw Games that is currently “working away in the shadows” on their debut game. This news comes via an interview with Jeff Gerstmann, which you can view below. The part where they talk about the new studio starts at 1:18:33, but if you want to learn more about Jason’s career, the whole interview is worth a watch.
What is Dark Outlaw Games making?
Unfortunately, Jason Blundell gave nothing away on what Dark Outlaw Games is making for PlayStation, not even a sly little hint like he used to do in interviews about Zombies. All we know is it’s a new IP. He described the current situation as “laying low” and “staffing up.” He calls the opportunity to start a new PlayStation Game Studios dev team a “privilege.”
Blundell says that the focus and fanfare should be directed on the game, not the studio itself, which is why this is our first time hearing about it. We have a feeling that the recent past is a reason for that. In 2020, Blundell left Treyarch after 13 years with the studio. The next year, Deviation Games, a new studio that had signed an agreement to make a PlayStation exclusive game was announced at Summer Games Fest. Unfortunately, nothing ever came of it. Blundell left the studio in 2022 for unknown reasons and Deviation was closed down last year.
At this point, who knows what we will see from Jason Blundell and Dark Outlaw Games. At the very earliest, the studio was formed sometime in 2022 and has a couple of good years put into their game. Even with that said, we don’t know the budget attributed to it and might not see anything on it for a while.
