The option to link your PlayStation Network Account and Steam Account has been in Helldivers 2 since its launch. With that being said, there are many who either don’t have a PSN login or don’t care to link their accounts. That is about to change because Sony is officially requiring all Helldivers 2 players to have a PlayStation account and to link it to their Steam account. Players are understandably upset by this and some even fear that no backup is coming from their Xbox counterparts now.
Sony made the announcement on the Helldivers 2 Steam community board and it states that “As of May 6th, all new Helldivers 2 players on Steam will be required to connect their Steam account to a PlayStation Network account.” It also says that “current players on Steam will start to see the mandatory login from May 30th.”
The news was relayed on Reddit by user Tetrislove and the comments are understandably upset. One user commented “Don’t have a PSN account. Honestly, why force you to have this? This feels dumb.. also rip the chance of us getting backup via Xbox players I guess.” Others are just annoyed about needing to create another account. One user said, “If they want my data so bad they can buy it from Google like everyone else.”
As one user pointed out, “Xbox does the same thing when trying to play Minecraft, even if it’s on a PlayStation. This won’t have any effect on whether the game comes to Xbox or not.” Exactly, many games require you to have accounts for other platforms when you log in. For instance, any Ubisoft or EA game requires an account no matter what platform you play on. Of course, the issue is bigger than the creation of an account. PSN is not available in many countries and could lead to players getting kicked from the game. As a reaction to this, many have since review bombed Helldivers 2 to show their displeasure of the company’s decision. We don’t believe that Sony would keep this requirement if it means a loss of revenue, especially since Helldivers 2 is one of the biggest games on the platform at this current time. We believe that the requirement will be kept but only for countries that have access to PSN.
