The Marvel Rivals closed beta is currently online, and its numbers show that people are enjoying the experience. Comparing its player counts on Steam to that of the recent Concord beta shows that many more people are looking into Marvel’s hero shooter than they are PlayStation’s take on Destiny’s Crucible.
As of this writing, the Marvel Rivals closed beta, which requires players to be invited in, saw a peak of 52,671 players. Even during the work day, it’s sitting at a very healthy 21,348. The recent Concord open beta, which absolutely anyone could download and play for free a week ago, peaked at 2,388 players, and quickly dropped to about 1,000 for the rest of its play test.
While the hype for the Marvel Rivals beta is really starting to heat up, Concord’s stock is probably as low as it could get currently. Obviously, we are taking the beta numbers from Steam and not PlayStation, as we can’t see those numbers, but Steam is one of the largest player bases for multiplayer games. The open beta had fewer people playing it than the closed beta a week before. There really isn’t much to point to the game turning things around before its expected $40 release in a month.
Looking at the situation, it’s easy to see why Marvel Rivals has more hype around it. A lot of people know the characters at play here. We have household names like Spider-Man, Venom, Iron Man, and many more. Compare that to Concord, which has continually been described as generic in its hero design. When we played Concord, there was not much of anything that stood out to us. We didn’t get accepted into the Marvel Rivals beta, and it’s something we really wanted to play. Perception around both games are on complete opposite sides of the spectrum.
