Mario vs. Donkey Kong, the Switch remake of the classic Game Boy Advance title released in 2004, has at the time of writing not yet been fully released and is only accessible in the form of a demo on the Switch e-Shop, but this has not stopped one modder from creating a cosmetic mod for the game. On January 31, 2024, X user NintyGameTube posted a short video showcasing a mod that he created that replaces Mario’s normal in-game model with the one used in Super Mario 64.

Released in 1996, Super Mario 64 marked the plumber’s debut in 3D and for many players. This version of the mustachioed hero consisting of chunky polygons carries with it a heavy dose of nostalgia. Said model consists of about 240 polygons; a far cry from today’s models which often contain polygon counts in the tens of thousands. The fact that such a mod was able to be created in such a short time speaks to the skill of NintyGameTube and the potential for mod support from the community for Mario vs Donkey Kong on the Switch. Hopefully, this is only the start of even greater efforts to come.
