Nintendo is in a rush to announce just about anything besides the successor to the Nintendo Switch. Today, the latest announcement is a new smartphone app called Nintendo Music. As you might expect from the name, this app will allow you to stream songs from various Nintendo titles throughout the last 40 years. You can view the trailer below.
Unfortunately, not just anyone can access the Nintendo Music app. Later tonight, it will go live on both the Apple and Google Play stores, but you must have an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription to be able to listen to these songs. However, the free trial will give you access, as will being a part of a family group with an active subscription. The base subscription will also work, this is not exclusive to the Expansion Pack subscription that gives you access to Nintendo 64 games.
For longtime Nintendo fans, this is a really nice announcement. For whatever reason, Nintendo has never played friendly with putting music from their games on Spotify or YouTube. You can often find covers, but anything official is likely to be hit with a DMCA sooner or later. Now, you’ll be able to play it whenever you want.
It appears that while there are a ton of classic games and some surprises represented on the Nintendo Music app, not everything will be there at launch. However, the trailer did show they plan on adding more, including Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, though we’re not quite sure how those didn’t make the cut for the first wave.
As a huge Legend of Zelda fan, I am so excited to finally just have a quick way to play music from Ocarina of Time and other games. There’s also a way to extend songs up to an hour so you can loop them in the background while you do other stuff. Needless to say, we’re very excited to see this app go live.
