The Nintendo Switch just keeps selling as we all await what is next for the company. The latest sales update for the Nintendo Switch shows that the hybrid console stands at over 139 million units sold worldwide. For comparison, the Nintendo DS is at 154 million, and the PlayStation 2 sold over 155 million for the top two spots.
Of course, just about everyone is waiting to see what the Nintendo Switch successor will end up being, whether it’s the Switch 2 or something else. However, even if the new console comes this year, there is a viable chance for the Switch to become the highest-selling console in history. Of course, a lot of that will rely on the current models dropping in price and customers buying new units instead of used ones, but it is very possible.
Tears of the Kingdom sales have dropped significantly
Hardware sales aren’t the only update we got, as Nintendo Switch software title numbers were also revised. Probably the most interesting development is how quickly The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sales dropped off. As of September, we reported that the game had sold nearly 20 million copies and was leading the way for all Switch sales. Since then, it hasn’t broken a million more. Everyone excited about the game bought it, but not many new adopters have jumped into Link’s newest adventure. For comparison, it has just barely outsold Breath of the Wild since the last sales update, though Tears of the Kingdom easily remained the highest-selling Switch game in 2023.
Other notable updates:
- The Switch is now the highest-selling console ever in Japan, passing the DS at over 33 million.
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe passed 60 million units sold, selling over 3 million copies since September, easily being the highest-selling Switch game in that span.
- Pikmin 4 has crossed 3 million sales, which is the best in the series.
- The order of the top 10 selling games has remained the same since September.
