Of all the ways to leak an unannounced game, Nintendo has one of the more surprising cases today. The ESRB released a new rating for a game called Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, and it is coming to the Switch.
The ESRB listing also includes a description of what the game is. For a quick rundown of what it is, the game will be a collection of 2D challenges that quickly move through various NES games. Some challenges will be surviving battles. Others will be reaching the end of a course.
Obviously, the listing doesn’t offer much more information outside of that, but this is a pretty exciting development for Switch fans. The Nintendo World Championships were held in the 90s and had players compete on stage in front of a crowd. The 1990 cartridge for the event goes for hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars.
What is Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition?
So what could this Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition for Switch be? If we were to speculate, we would guess this is a new addition to the Nintendo Switch Online game library. We think this could very easily fill the same role as Tetris 99, Super Mario Bros. 35, and F-Zero 99. A free download for subscribers that pits players against each other. We don’t think the lobbies would be as large as those other games, but that would be the best way to get the most players possible. Also, the title expressly saying NES Edition fills us with excitement for other console iterations in the future.
As of this writing, Nintendo has not made an official announcement for Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. The ESRB is about as legitimate of a source as you can get, so this is a real game. We imagine whenever the next Nintendo Direct is will announce the game and have it available shortly after.
