Overwatch 2 is gearing up for its long-awaited story mode release with Overwatch 2: Invasion. After announcing PvE was being scaled back in recent weeks, a blog post detailing the upcoming content was released, including the price tag.
This blog post’s most important and probably controversial topic is the pricing to play the new story content. Two bundles will give you access to three story missions from Overwatch 2: Invasion. The standard bundle costs $15 and includes the following:
- Three story missions in Canada, Rio de Janeiro, and Gothenburg
- 1,000 Overwatch Coins
- Legendary skin for Sojourn
- Sojourn as a playable PvP character upon completion if you don’t already have her
If you have some extra money to spend on the game, the Overwatch 2: Invasion Ultimate bundle includes all of the above for $40 plus the following:
- Season 6 battle pass and 20 free level skips
- Additional 1,000 Overwatch Coins (2,000 in total)
- Legendary skins for Cassidy and Kiriko
With Overwatch 2 being a free-to-play game, we always suspected that the incoming PvE content would require payment to access. On the surface, $15 for three missions that we suspect to be about an hour long each isn’t a terrible price. Access to this in-game content is cheaper than the standard price for one legendary skin in the PvP store, which surprises us. There is probably a conversation there that the skins are still at an exorbitant price — because they are — but the long-awaited PvE content doesn’t seem too bad.
The real questions for us come down to how often story missions will be coming out. If we only get three story missions a year, that is severely lacking in pushing the Overwatch 2 story forward. In contrast, asking players to spend extra on top of a battle pass every other season will be too much. We would rather see one flat rate to cover all upcoming story missions for the future, but Blizzard is going about this in a way that could bring them money for the foreseeable future.
