The gaming community has noticed major price increases over the past few years. It started with the price of games being increased to $70. Shortly after, we got price increases for services such as Game Pass. One of the biggest upsets was the price increase for PlayStation Plus. Originally, the price of PlayStation Plus was $60/year. This increased to $80/year, and Sony created additional tiers for different bonuses that can cost up to $160/year. One fan, being sick of the price increases, recently bought 24 years worth of PlayStation Plus. Now, their subscription won’t run out until 2048 and they only needed to pay around $2,000 for it.
Recently, user On_Reddit_In_Class posted about their purchase on Reddit. They purchased the Essential tier of PlayStation Plus all the way through 2048. At $80/year, this cost them a total of around $1,920. On top of this, they were able to upgrade the entire Essentials plan with the Premium upgrade for only $200. This brings the total spent to around $2,120 in total for the 24 years of PlayStation Plus Premium. The upgrade worked out like this because there is a cap on what Sony will make someone pay for the Premium upgrade, giving the user an 82% discount. So how much did this PlayStation Plus user save?
If you were to purchase PlayStation Plus Premium every year for the next 24 years, you would pay around $3,840. This is assuming that the cost of PS Plus Premium won’t increase for the next 24 years. Of course, the price will increase as Sony will inevitably raise the price again. If the price were to increase by another $20 next year, a Premium player would pay over $4,000 for 24 years of PlayStation Plus. It looks like this deal could pay off in the long run.
There was plenty of shock in the comments and while some agreed that the purchase was wise, others criticized the move saying they aren’t sure if PS Plus will even be around that long. Of course, one user commented, “It’s even crazier when you think you can play on PC and play online literally for free,” pointing out the fact that PC players have the cheaper alternative to console gamers if you can get past the high entry fee of a good gaming PC.
