Sonic Rumble has been officially announced for mobile platforms today by Sega. Originally called Sonic Toys Party in leaks about a month ago, the game will be fully released this coming winter, but a playtest for US players will happen this month.
The best comparison for what Sonic Rumble is, is Fall Guys. 32 players in a lobby will race each other to the end of various courses. Eventually, a winner will be decided. Along the way, you can collect rings to unlock costumes. There are also all kinds of characters throughout Sonic’s 30-plus years you can get, we suspect, through microtransactions and battle bass rewards. Characters we’ve seen include Big the Cat, Metal Sonic, Jet the Hawk, and many more, as well as original characters.
Even though everyone has their own abilities in the mainline Sonic games, we doubt that the character you play will give you a particular advantage in any facet of the game. These are not the actual characters competing against each other. Instead, they are toy versions developed by Dr. Eggman for whatever reason.
Sonic Rumble Closed Beta details
The upcoming beta test will be available to iPhone and Android users in the US. It is recommended you have at least an iPhone 11 or Android 8.0 device to get the most out of the game. The deadline to register is the end of May 19, with the closed beta taking place the weekend of May 24-26. You can follow the official X account for updates.
While it’s a bit disappointing that there is no console or PC version of the game announced, maybe that could come in the future if the mobile version performs well enough. Fall Guys had a boom in popularity during the pandemic but is less talked about these days. It will be interesting to see if Sonic Rumble can stand out and prove it is a game players should flock to.
