Rumors started popping up at the end of last year that Valve could be working on a Steam-based console. When those rumors began to circulate, it was said this new piece of hardware would be paired with new iterations of the Steam Controller and a VR headset. Today, the rumor mill sparked once again with more claims of a Steam console being on the way.
This rumor comes to us via the known gaming leaker eXtas1s, where they claimed through a new social media post that this new console could be in the works over at Valve and aims to rival the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series Consoles.
More recently, Valve has found new levels of success in the world of console gaming with the Steam Deck which is considered to be one of the best handheld gaming consoles on the market. Comparing this to Valve’s prior venture into the world of home consoles with the Steam Machine, which has since been discontinued, they may want to give this venture another look, or at the very least make sure they have all aspects of this device fleshed out this time around.
In theory, a Steam home console would be a welcome addition to the console market outside of the typical “you plug the thing in, and it just works”. In 2025, PC gaming ranks highly amongst hardcore and casual gamers alike. Not to mention this would also open doors for users with already established Steam libraries to enjoy a more traditional console experience on their televisions. Cross-saves could also play a huge role with users who would jump between their typical PC rig and what would be this home console. Lastly, who would be able to turn down steam sales that are available at a push of a button?
