Nintendo Switch 2 delayed to 2025 to avoid online scalpers

Last week, rumors started popping up around the internet that the Nintendo Switch 2, or whatever the company’s next console is called, has been delayed. Should these substantially backed rumors be true, it is expected that the successor will be released by March 2025. Today, Japanese site Nikkei is reporting that one reason the console has been delayed is to try to prevent shortages due to online scalpers.

Should this report be correct, we are happy to hear about this delay. We imagine that there may be other factors at play, like launch games needing to be delayed or various other issues. Still, if the big reason to push the console back is just so they can manufacture more so it’s easier for everyone to secure one at launch, we are all for it. 2024 is looking like a pretty quiet year for the Switch, but we will take that for a better launch for the Switch 2.

Of course, tons of people will be looking to buy the next console, so who knows how much this would help, but scalpers have been using bots to get a large stock of new console releases and then selling them at a gross profit on sites like eBay. If anything, we are just happy to see companies fight this behavior.

When the original Nintendo Switch launched in 2017, it was very difficult for people to get their hands on it for months. The same thing happened with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X releases in 2020. Now that the Nintendo Switch is contending with the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS as the most-sold console of all time, hopefully, the headache won’t be as severe when the successor comes out.
