What's up, guys, this is Kalo, and normally I'm here to give you the lowdown in all things gaming, but welcome back to another episode of the cutting board
0:15
And today, I am joined by Aiden. Why don't you say what's up? Hey-oh
0:19
So, there's a little game that was teased, announced, whatever have you, at Gamescom
0:27
It goes... Very small. Very tiny. And I don't know if you know this. Maybe a little bit. There's no signs. There's no signs behind you. There's nothing like there to indicate you're a fan of this franchise. But it's called Borderlands. And Borderlands 4 is officially official. A little teaser trailer was dropped at Gamescom. And we're here today to kind of deliver our expectations, our wants, our needs from this game. Because it's safe to say this is long, over
0:59
overdue. Now, I'm going to pass it off to you first. Let's talk a little borderlands here
1:06
What are your, I want to say your expectations for Borderlands for
1:11
To start with, I am deeply disappointed as to when they decided to announce the game. I think
1:18
that it was a terrible time to announce it because fan expectation and just like overall hype
1:26
for the series in general is like at an all time low thanks to the movie
1:30
And so, like, really, I think releasing that whole trailer now is a big mistake
1:36
They should have at least let it the movie press die off first because of how poorly it was received
1:44
But, I mean, other than that, I mean, my feelings are more or less mixed
1:49
I mean, like, I'm a huge fan in the series. I absolutely love it. I mean, I have a touch on a show that I love it
1:57
But, like, really, the first two. great. I'm even a fan of the pre-sequel, despite it not being as good, but three is where you start
2:05
to see it die off. And I, my expectation for four is for it to be mechanically amazing
2:13
because three was mechanically sound, and it was far better than two when it's just come
2:21
it comes down to gameplay. But when it comes to story, I don't have the biggest expectation for it
2:30
Because I feel like I want it to be a more serious borderlands
2:35
and for it to go back to satirical humor and more situational humor
2:41
versus there being like potty humor and a bunch of like just immature jokes that didn't really
2:50
that wasn't there for the start of the series. And if they go back to relying on like memes and
2:59
like immature toilet humor like they did in three for a majority of the jokes
3:04
then that's where they're going to see a lot of people just start to really hate it
3:10
and then that's where they're going to lose a lot of their fan base and I mean I'll call out YouTubers like
3:17
you know like Moxie for instance is one of them Killer Six is another
3:21
they will defend the series to the death because probably because they're paid off from Gearby
3:29
bucks, but also because they're like Disney adults. They won't see where
3:38
the negativity is. Yep. And instead, they'll just be like, oh, no matter what
3:45
everything Disney does is fine, even though they are taking like 900 more dollars
3:49
out of something that doesn't cost that much. Yada, yada, yada. But
3:52
really, the downfall of Borderlands 3 was a story. And so if they keep that up in borderlines for it will make or break the game or then the franchise at a hole really now to get back to what you said at the very start if you were in charge you don't really know how the movie would fare honestly you made the movie and you kind of just set it out you might have an expectation or a thought like this could go one way or another but would you have done the reveal for the game first then launched the movie and you kind of just set it out you might have an expectation or a thought like this could go one way or another but would you have done the reveal for the game first then launched the
4:28
movie? Or do you think that's, you're kind of at a lost, loss there
4:32
I mean, 100%. I think they should have revealed the game first. They would have
4:37
and with the game reveal, they could have done something involving the movie, too. They could
4:43
have said, like, oh, here's borderlands four. Now also go see the movie or whatever. And that would
4:48
have made the movie, that would have put the movie in more of the, like, light right there and
4:55
allowed more people to want to go see it probably. But instead they released it in the other order and it took the franchise, bombed it
5:05
and then went, oh, now here's this game that you might care about. It's like, yeah, you're just shining a turret at that point, at least as of right now
5:15
I think I agree with you with this notion that Borderlands 3 kind of, it's weird
5:25
Is this the right way to say it? It looks like a boomer made it where it's like the two villains were these live streamers that was big at the time
5:35
And it still is. But like they were really trying to hammer that point home
5:40
These are two young influencers who are live streaming everything. And it was like that bare bones like understanding of the culture at the time
5:52
Now, Borderlands 1 and 2 still have. have that aura about them where it's like I love these games they're very just I can go back and
6:01
play them at any point and just I enjoy it it's too it's so much fun now as far as expectations
6:08
for borderlands four one thing I think that makes borderlands borderlands is the weapons and the
6:16
vast amount of weapons I think we're at no shortage here when we say that this game's
6:22
going to have a lot of guns which I am there for but
6:25
when we pitched this video a little idea that came to mind have you play cyberpunk 2077 or no a little bit i never got into it to the greatest degree but Okay so there is a weapon in that game that like has this AI built into it
6:46
and it's basically, like, comedic relief. There is a weapon like that in Borderlands
6:51
I forgot which one that, like, it's like the pew. It makes all the pew noises when you shoot it or whatever
6:57
It depends on what you're talking about, because there's multiple. Oh, so there you go
7:01
There's multiple crocking weapons. But I think it was a white one
7:06
I think I remember that was the color. I don't know. But I think what Borderlands 4 needs outside from a vast amount of weapons in general
7:16
which there's probably going to be over like two million guns, whatever
7:20
I think there should be a thing within the game that lets you customize the weapons themselves even further
7:27
Like you get the weapon and let's say you scrap a copy of it, much like Fallout does with mods and stuff like
7:34
like that, where it's like you get the base gun, you can add on to whatever you want
7:39
change things out, colors, whatever, customization. I think that should be where they focus more on
7:45
Not the amount of guns is how much you can do to a certain set of them, which I think that
7:50
would add, but it's a looter shooter, like, that's what it is. I'm completely against that, man
7:56
Really? Yeah, like, I would not want to customize my own weapons in that
8:01
Because part of, like, the fun of Borderlands is to grind out getting, like, weapon drops and everything
8:08
And, like, really, the vast adversity of the weapons is part of what makes it fun
8:14
Because you never know what you're going to get, and it makes it unique every time you play
8:19
That's part of the reason why I loved the original one to begin with. But, like, if you start getting into that whole, oh, well, now you're just going to, like, edit and, you know, customize each gun
8:30
I mean, really, you're just turning the game to Call of Duty at that point where it's just like
8:34
oh, hey, yeah, I'll make my own load out for this weapon. And it's like, I don't, I don't think anybody in the series
8:40
like any fan in the series would actually really want that because I think they'd be like
8:46
I think they would say that it would take away from one key aspect that actually makes Borderlands
8:51
what Borderlands is. Yeah, no, I can see that. And another quick thing I had was
8:58
the handling of vehicles. in this game. I think it's high time we get better controlling vehicles within this game
9:07
I get there have been improvements made in each entry. But I don't know
9:13
I get the point of the game you run around and you like loot, you shoot, do whatever
9:18
But there are sections with vehicular combat. There are sections where you have to traverse a map, a vast distance, and you're using a car
9:26
I just think like a cool, maybe upgraded or refined. version of what they have now, that would be welcome
9:34
Yeah, I mean, them refining the, the killer, like, combat and everything, like, just the way vehicles
9:39
work in general would be nice. I mean, it's kind of, like, old-school, like, Halo controls and stuff, and it's, like
9:46
they can be kind of janky, it can be kind of difficult to control them under certain circumstances
9:50
I think them really redefining on, like, every control for the weapon, like, for a
9:58
weapon, but vehicles would be a lot better. but I mean one of the things that I really want from them in general
10:05
like if we're talking like gameplay wise I want them to focus really on like
10:12
abilities again like they didn't three of like going off the wall with like
10:16
expanding abilities like I loved that in like I love that part of three
10:20
where they had for each character they had four skill trees yeah and I think that that's something that they should really do again
10:29
is they should focus on making every character's abilities as expandable as possible
10:36
And so, like, most, for instance, like, I loved, like, her four skill trees
10:43
and how you could, like, change, like, the way Iron Bear works and everything with different weapons
10:48
And then, like, with Amara, I really liked how they did the whole, oh, yeah, it changes, like, how her
10:54
like, whole cyber ability functions. Where, like, one, you have, like, the great
10:58
the phase grass, the other one's just a punch and everything. And I feel like
11:03
going forward like, well, one, I definitely don't want them to do
11:09
like old characters. Like, I don't want them to bring back old characters as the playable characters
11:14
Like, unless we're talking Tiny Tina. Then they should make Tiny Tina
11:18
a playable character. They should have done that all along. But, um, but I digress with that one
11:24
But like, if they were to bring back like Lilith and Mordecai and brick and stuff from the first game
11:28
just to allow you to choose from them or allow you to choose from any of the vault hunters
11:34
that already exist I would feel a little disappointed in that because they've always changed it with every game
11:41
and so like I would love for them to do new characters yet again
11:46
but like I said just really expand on that skill free aspect
11:51
give them unique abilities that are like able to be changed again
11:57
to fit certain circumstances or fit a certain build. Now, I'm going to ask you this question
12:03
and I'm just going to label you as the Borderlands expert here
12:08
Would you prefer this game to take place on one planet, or do you want something like a Jedi survivor
12:14
where you go to different planets, you explore, there's different, like, biomes on the map, like a Halo Infinite
12:22
Like, what do you want as far as the map goes? So, like, map-wise, I
12:27
see I was very much disappointed with how they handled three with the multiple maps like I feel like with how many maps they made
12:36
it was way more than they should have and it overcomplicated the game made it so that you had to travel way too often
12:45
and so I would love to see them go back to the whole focusing on one maybe two planets like it looks like from the trailer it looks like
12:56
Elvis will play a role and I'm sure Pandora will play a role because it always does
13:02
and it looks like the Eridian home world will play a role
13:06
and so like I would love for them to just focus on just those three
13:12
don go beyond that because if they go beyond those three then they going to end up going into the same issue with Borderlands 3 where each world felt kind of rushed
13:24
But like each world felt a little lackluster in some way. So like, and one of the biggest ones in three was Eden 6, like the, like the swamp planet
13:35
Like that one, it should have been, it should have been great
13:39
There should have been a massive war going on there because it was a high
13:43
hostile takeover at the Jacobs Company, but there was no massive war going on on the planet
13:51
It felt kind of barren and didn't really feel like there was a lot
13:55
of stuff going on. That's what I think games like Fallout and Bethesda
14:01
do so well in Fallout 4. I'm talking about like Far Harbor
14:05
stuff like that, where you have your main hub world, and then you can fast travel to like
14:11
another scaled down version of a much bigger area. I think that's what Borderlands should do in a way
14:18
I know there's like certain things that make the game the game, but doing that allows
14:23
you to one focus on the main game, your vanilla experience, you want to make sure that's jam
14:28
packed with things. But then later down the line, you're like, all right, let's go to this planet or let's do
14:33
this, like a new, I don't know, like a new weapon manufacturer facility you go to and you
14:39
fight there. I just like that idea of giving, giving you the base, the roots of the game, and then
14:48
later down the line, here's an offshoot branch of this section of the map or this. Like, do that
14:54
or add some verticality for all I care. Just fill the world. I like filling the world with
14:59
things and people. I mean, that's what they did with like, borderlands too will always forever shine
15:05
is like the beacon of the perfect game basically in the series
15:10
And if they could do everything that they can to emulate what Borderlands 2 did
15:15
then I'd be all for it. But like, they had Borderlands 2, and then they did exactly what you talked about
15:21
They expanded on that, where Borderlands 2 focused only on Pandora. You went further into Pandora
15:30
You went on a massive map. but then every DLC was you had like the Tiny Tena DLC
15:36
where you went to a different map and it was all bunkers and badasses or I can't even think of the DLCs right now
15:44
you had that one that goes up the the Digistruct Peak or whatever
15:48
that just added a new area where you just go and fight through
15:51
Didistruct Peak over and over again and that one was good it was a long fighting area
15:56
but like then you also have like the smaller DLCs like the TORD DLC
16:00
like all the headhundred DLCs. Like, the small, like, Headhunter DLC for Tor, that was another little map
16:08
Like, each headhunter DLC was just its own little map that was good
16:14
Yeah, it's to look at this game, Borderlands 4 specifically, it's under a bigger microscope
16:21
because this is a, I would assume, 2025, am I really hedging my bets
16:27
that a new next-gen console is coming out by then? No, it's not. not
16:32
No. Console, uh, lifespan are typically eight years. So we got them
16:39
what, in 2018? I think it was, 2019 or something. So we aren't going to get PS
16:47
like, PS6 and like Xbox 720 or whatever until like, like, probably
16:55
2026 or 2027, I would assume. Yeah. I guess my main thing
17:01
thing there was these are going to be, well, these are next-gen borderlands games anyway for really
17:07
going by technicalities. These games are going to have to be bigger in pretty much every facet. So
17:15
I'm going to be very interested to see how they handle that. Because getting this hardware we have now
17:23
the PC, the way we know that is, there's a lot on the table as far as what they could do with the
17:29
game and I'm not trying to say like completely flip it on its head I'm just saying beef it up like
17:35
make it freaking awesome top to bottom make it perform well I need visuals to be on par I love that
17:42
art style they have for this game I've always loved that and it seems like they're getting rid of
17:48
the art style a little bit I mean at least in the trailer the the cell shading did not look
17:54
at as much reminiscent as two and three so I'm just going to
17:59
Going with this idea that that was like a live action, whatever cinematic trailer
18:06
and then we're going to get the gameplay eventually. Do you think we get gameplay by the end of this year
18:11
Typically, they do things like six months. So like I would assume beginning of next year
18:17
I'm going to guess right now it's going to be just judging by like how they'd like to release things
18:24
My guess is going to end up being March. Okay. I could see that
18:28
March next year. I think that's when we're going to get a gameplay trailer. Fair enough
18:33
I'm there for it. I need more. I need more of this game, even though this minute and change trailer
18:40
it's not enough for me. It's not enough. Yeah. But I mean, like, really they
18:45
I'm feeling March 2 as well because, like, you have good releases coming all the way up
18:50
Yeah. Until, like, December. It's going to be overshadowed. Oh, yeah. No matter what, they release gameplay
18:56
it's going to be overshadowed by all these releases. and then beginning of next year
19:00
you don't have any releases that happens all the time where there's no releases at the start of the year
19:05
so that's like the perfect time to release trailer next year's gonna be tough
19:10
I mean we have the Switch 2 hopefully maybe I don't know
19:14
you doubt it at this point GTA 5 that maybe hopefully fingers crossed
19:24
I probably just jinxed it but yeah 2025 is going to be a massive year in gaming
19:30
Everything's coming back. Everything. All the good stuff, which I'm excited for. Yeah
19:36
No, it will be. Like, I'm speaking of that, really, in the trailer
19:40
I mean, there's, like, I talked about in an article, there's a
19:44
brief flash where you have, like, one frame after the, uh, after the whole
19:52
20 wish list now thing Where people point out that it looks like it says like Monday 15 like right afterwards
20:02
and the and people point out that the only Monday the 15th in the entirety
20:08
of 2025 is in September which would make sense for them because like
20:14
September is their like typical like release time yeah where they will
20:22
release like Borderlands 2, Borderlands 3, both of those released in September
20:27
They typically will reveal stuff around September and everything. So like, really next year, September, I could see it on the 16th, not the 15th, because
20:37
they wouldn't release on Monday. Yeah. So like really September 16th is when I would see the release day for it being
20:45
So that's a good time considering everything releasing next year. Yeah. Spaced it out
20:51
space it out as much as you can. We might be onto something. We might have the release date
20:57
Title of this video, release date for Borderlands 4 revealed, question mark
21:02
It writes itself. Or handsome jack confirmed question mark? Because like, I mean, if we're breaking down the trailer
21:09
I mean, there is that whole mask that they show off. And it's very brief, but they show off that, like
21:15
mass face that happens to have the borderline, like the vault symbol on the face
21:21
and like I said, I mentioned that in the article too, where, like, a lot of people point out that's, like, similar to Jack right there
21:30
Because he has the borderline, like, he has the, you know, vault symbol, like, etched into his face
21:36
But the only thing that I pointed out is that, like, everyone's talking about, like, how it's, like, Jack, but I'm not entirely sure
21:44
Because if you look at it, Jack's face, the borderline, the, well, I keep pointing to say
21:51
the borderline symbol, but the vault symbol is the opposite direction on this face. So I don't think it's him
21:57
Unless it's a mirrored image, I don't think it's him. Conspiracy theories
22:01
already for the trailer and it's been out for a few hours, so there's a lot to unpack in that
22:07
little minute clip. Well, I mean, there is. I mean, even the
22:12
CEO of Gearbox said that, like, we, not everybody has figured everything out, but there is a good
22:19
list of stuff that people have seen but I will point out the other words the other images in it there's like the two the two images of like the iridium text or people are thinking that it says one of them they think says he is coming and then the other one says break free
22:41
so another thing for handsome jack there because they're thinking like oh he's referring to oh he's coming back could be
22:51
And then the other one, like, being break free is like, oh, he's been locked away or something after the events of, like, two
22:59
But, like, really, he died and two. I mean, let's just face it, he died
23:03
He is dead. Unless we're going crazy, he's not coming back. I guarantee you, unless it's Timothy, his clone or whatever, I think that's an English one
23:15
Like, going crazy too. I don't think that we're getting handsome jack back
23:20
But what I do think is that in three, it talked about how there was that seventh siren that, like, is hidden and shouldn't be looked for
23:29
I feel like the whole he is coming thing is referring to the seventh siren, but also sirens are supposed to be female, so it doesn't really add up there too
23:41
So there's a lot. It's a little bit, little bit. Can't really figure it out my, I want to, though, for the sake of it
23:50
I want to guess that it's going to be a Simon Hunter. You heard it here first
23:55
This is where it's happening right here on Game Sandwich. I mean, shoot, what better way
24:01
It's a Simon Hunter. If it's a Simon Hunter, I totally called it. There it is
24:05
We'll mark it down here in history. But do you have any closing thoughts about Borderlands 4
24:10
The only thing I can really say is that it, gearbox really with this one
24:15
this one is make or break for them. It truly is. A lot of people know it
24:20
after everything with three and after hitting the new tales from the borderlands and that flopping
24:26
and then doing the movie and that flopping like the only good thing they've done in the past
24:31
like four years or five years is the Tiny Teener's Wonderlands and even that was
24:37
only mildly received better than everything else like so really when it comes down to it
24:46
gearbox knows this is make a break for the franchise and they need to pull everything
24:53
they need to pull out all the stops for it, and they need to make it good again
24:57
not just pack it full of toilet humor, a meme humor that won't hold up five years from now
25:05
If they can do that and they can stick to their story and make it good
25:10
I really feel like this can make it for the franchise, but we're just going to have to see
25:16
We are going to have to see, and in case you want to talk more borderlands i think it's safe to say we're going to be talking a lot in our
25:24
discord channel links to that is in the video description down below i'm hyped for borderlands for i can't
25:32
wait i also can't wait to see the cover if the the guy on the cover is doing this or whatever he's
25:38
gonna do oh that could be it that maybe we cracked the code there i don't know it's always i like covers
25:45
of video games they're always nice especially borderland they make good video game covers
25:50
Very colorful, very nice. Why do I feel like the cover? Why do I feel like the cover is going to be like the boarlet, like the psycho
25:58
But it's going to be like four different people holding guns to them like this
26:05
The speculation, it's going off now. Now I can go off for days about that
26:09
It's like Left for Dead whenever they did Left for Dead one. Oh, it was four
26:13
Yeah, I'll have the cover up there. I was just looking at it. But I'm getting sidetracked
26:18
Anyway, this has been an episode of the cutting board. I've been Kalo, joined by Aiden, and we'll see you guys next time
