Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 is nearly here and it wouldn’t be a triple A game launch without a rocky start. Out of all things that could go wrong with this launch it turns out fans have taken up problems with the game’s built-in support for third party audio tools. This has led many to say that there is now a “pay to win” crutch within the game because in a technical sense this does improve your in-game hearing abilities.
In a recent blog post that was shared by Activision they revealed the game will feature what they’re calling an Enhanced Headphone Mode (EHM) that does enhance the directional accuracy of sound within the games world. And when you talk about first person shooter games, let alone one as competitive as Call Of Duty, being able to hear every little gunshot, footstep or explosion can make all the difference. But this enhanced headphone mode will be available to all players for free and you can dive into this all via your sound settings menu.
But oddly enough the story doesn’t end there because the blog post in question failed to mention that besides the free to use EHM the game will also include an option to create a personalized profile within the EHM mode. This feature once dialed in correctly will make it a whole lot easier to pinpoint the origins of certain sounds with a 3D space. And you can acquire this “superhuman hearing” for the price tag of $20 with a five-year subscription.
As of now the player base seems split on this matter. One section of the community says this is a big concern with the larger issue being Activision pretty much made the free audio system obsolete pushing sales to the paid option. On the other side of the coin here some think personalized profiles won’t have too much of an impact on matches. A comparison there was drawn to in-game cosmetic skins which while this is a massive stretch, some do possess the ability to alter gameplay but are purchased without any complaints.
