Sony’s Project Q price range possibly leaked in Microsoft court documents

A court document drafted as part of Microsoft’s legal battle with the FTC over the Activision-Blizzard acquisition has potentially revealed that Sony’s currently unpriced Project Q will be sold for under $300.

As more details regarding both Xbox and Sony are revealed during the ongoing litigation regarding the largest acquisition the industry has ever seen (should it pass), Sony’s latest hardware may have gotten caught in the splash damage. As highlighted by Stephen Totilo on Twitter, an asterisk on one document drafted by Microsoft lawyers in an attempt to argue for the deal passing states that “Sony is also anticipated to release a handheld version of the PlayStation 5 later this year for under $300.”

While the Project Q is certainly not a handheld PS5, and merely a streaming device, the price point and release date were not something Sony has publicly revealed as of yet. The release window isn’t too surprising, however, the price has always been the major question for PlayStation fans. While “under $300” isn’t a firm number, most are taking this as a hint that it will cost at least $200, if not $250. For a device that still requires you to be on the same network as your PS5, that is too steep for most.

Sony hasn’t committed to a proper handheld since the Vita, and now seems more focused on its VR efforts as a second pillar next to its home consoles. The Project Q has potential for some players, but the price will need to be right given the limitations. We’ll need to wait for an official price reveal from Sony to be sure, but in the meantime, we will be following all the juicy details coming out of this court case.
