Starfield – How to pick locks

Screenshot by Game Sandwich

Do you need to pick a lock in Starfield? This Bethesda title is very similar to others from the developer like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in that you can pick locks to access doorways or open containers containing valuable loot.

When you activate a lock, you get a minigame that makes you physically pick the lock. Of course, it isn’t as simple as moving a lockpick around. Since Starfield is a sci-fi title, things are a little different. Instead of lockpicks, you have what are called Digipicks. This guide will show you how to pick locks in Starfield.

How to pick locks in Starfield

If you want to pick a lock, you will need to fill in the blanks shown during the lockpicking mini-game. When you activate a lock, you will be greeted by the image below — a ring with multiple gaps. On the right side of the screen, you will see different variations of bars around similar circles.

Select a set of bars from the side of the screen and match it up with the empty spaces in the circle. Depending on how difficult the lock is, you will have more or less difficult patterns to work with.

In the image above, you need two sets of bars to fill in all of the empty spaces. Once a ring has been filled in, it will disappear and you will move on to the next ring. Repeat the process until all of the rings are filled in. Only after all of the rings are filled in will the lock be broken.

How to get Digipicks in Starfield

To pick locks, you will need Digipicks. Just like in other Bethesda titles, this special kind of lockpick can be found in a variety of places. Some of the earlier-game Digipicks can be found in your ship, in containers, and on tables in buildings.

Later on, you will be able to purchase Digipicks to have a bigger supply of them. Each time you open a lock, it will consume one Digipick. Because of this, you will want to make sure that you always have a stockpile of them to break doors and crates open.
