Like any good RPG, there are multiple puzzles that you can complete throughout Super Mario RPG. If you want to solve the portrait puzzle in Super Mario RPG, you must interact with the portraits in the correct order. This order is supposed to be from youngest to oldest. If done correctly, you will get a hidden item.

Previous puzzles in the game can be just as difficult as this. For instance, you can complete the Melody Bay Music Puzzle to get more special items to help you on your journey. Going through Booster’s tower is already difficult so let’s make things easier. This guide will show you how to solve Booster’s Family Portrait Puzzle in Super Mario RPG.

Super Mario RPG – Booster’s Family Portrait Puzzle solution and rewards

To solve the family portrait puzzle in Super Mario RPG, you must interact with the paintings in the hallway in order from youngest to oldest. You can solve this puzzle by trial and error, or you can see the correct order in the image below. If you go the trial and error route, you will need to restart each time you guess wrong with the portraits.

The order of the images is as follows:

  1. The image on the far right – Portrait with the hat, mustache, and glasses
  2. Image that is second from the far right – Portrait with the yellow hat
  3. The image that is third from the left – Portrait with the red cap bandana and eyepatch
  4. Image that is on the far left – Portrait with the mohawk and sunglasses
  5. The image that is second from the far left – Portrait with the red beanie, glasses, and scruffy beard
  6. Image that is third from the far right – Portrait of Booster

When the portraits are flipped in the correct order, Booster will give you a key to the door to the left of the paintings. Use this key on the door and you will gain access to a small room with a Chain Chomp.

Bowser will interact with the Chain Chomp. After a few moments, he will tell you that the Chain Chimp wants to help the team and you will get it as a weapon. Be sure to equip it to Bowser as it is a strong weapon. If you haven’t be sure to go back and complete the Mushroom Derby and beat Boshi to get more items.
