The age of AI is upon us, and though it has barely started, there are plenty of companies that are quickly adopting it. Reports of developers using AI to assist in game creation, voiceovers, and more have surfaced, and while there is some pushback, most appear to be accepting this new technology. EA, for instance, has told employees to treat AI as a “partner,” while Microsoft is reportedly not putting any limitations on the use of AI from its developers. While all this is going on, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick spoke on the matter, saying AI can’t “create an equivalent to Grand Theft Auto.”
Take-Two Interactive CEO Talks About AI
Recently, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, appeared on CNBC. When talking about the use of AI, Zelnick stated, “Could we push a button tomorrow and create an equivalent to the Grand Theft Auto marketing plan? The answer is no.” Zelnick went on to say that through the use of AI, you would “end up with something pretty derivative.”
The reason Zelnick feels this way is due to AI being unable to innovate. The CEO stated that AI is “backward-looking,” which means it creates based on what has already been created, making it unable to imagine anything new. Due to this, we will most likely never see AI create a full GTA-style game, but it could create something that is a shell of what actual developers have done in the past.
Zelnick has been critical of AI in the past, with him stating previously, “It’s a bunch of data with a bunch of compute with a language model attached.” He also said that it would never “create genius,” nor would it ever “create hits.” AI has been on the rise, with other companies like Microsoft saying it wouldn’t put limits on it with game creation, and EA telling its employees to treat AI like a “partner.”
