This morning, PlayStation announced their latest addition to the PlayStation Studios umbrella. TeamLFG is a team stationed in Bellevue, WA made up of various industry veterans that seems to have spun-off from Bungie. The “LFG” stands for “Looking For Group,” not “Let’s F###ing Go,” if you were wondering. While we don’t know exactly what the new team is working on right now, we know that it will be working on live service games and PlayStation CEO Herman Hulst says they are making an “ambitious incubation project that I’m very excited about.” Of course, we’ve heard that many times for failed live service games in the past.

What is TeamLFG making for PlayStation?

For anyone that has paid attention to how PlayStation is delivering games over the last handful of years, the alarm sounds are likely going off in your head right now after the Concord situation from a year ago. In the blog post talking about the new addition, the team says they are “driven by a mission to create games where players can find friendship, community, and belonging,” which seems about as standard of a live service game announcement as possible. Knowing how much these always online games require players attention to survive, this is another game that will need to hit the ground running to have any extended life, unlike Concord.

Without giving anything substantial away, the blog post states:

“Our first game is a team-based action game that draws inspiration from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and frog-type games.  Players will inhabit a lighthearted, comedic world set in brand-new, mythic, science-fantasy universe. We can’t wait to reveal more.”

From that description, it sounds like whatever this game is, it will be throwing a lot of stuff at the wall to grab players’ attention. That can either work for or against the game, but we will have to wait until it is revealed to learn more.

When will TeamLFG reveal its first game?

Unfortunately, as of now, there is no indication for when the first TeamLFG game will be revealed. That being said, PlayStation announcing the studio now could line them up for a reveal sometime this summer, whether it is at Summer Game Fest or a PlayStation Showcase. If they were planning on doing that, though, we imagine they would have given more information about the studio at that time as well. It may be a year or two before we actually see what the team is working on.
