2025 is kicking off in a major way when Markus “Notch” Persson, the creator of Minecraft, announced plans to create its spiritual successor on X but with a catch. Back in 2014 Mojang was acquired by Microsoft which also resulted in the rights to the Minecraft IP being under new control. This essentially means that Notch cannot legally create an official sequel to Minecraft, but has plans to develop a spiritual successor under a totally new name.
In this lengthy post on X, Notch put up a poll asking fans whether or not he should continue working on his new game which does feature roguelike elements blended in with a tile-based first-person dungeon crawler, or develop the spiritual successor to his greatest work in Minecraft. And as you could assume the aforementioned Minecraft 2 is heavily favored within the poll. This led to Notch creating a follow up post where he did in fact say that he was “serious” about this poll stating “I basically announced Minecraft 2.”
After the 2014 acquisition of Mojang, Microsoft obtained the legal rights to the IP, which means that a direct sequel to Minecraft can only be created with Microsoft’s direct approval. Notch seems to be aware of this especially when explaining to a fan that it would be “super illegal” to create a direct sequel on his own. Notch then went on to elaborate that this game would be new and original and would boast an entirely new name. He also noted that the game would feature “new lore” and would have no connection to the current Minecraft lore.
Microsoft has given Minecraft plenty of new and exciting updates, spinoffs, and an impending crossover to the movie world. But with it being over 10 years since Minecraft’s original creator has had any direct input on the direction of the game it would be interesting to see what his vision for the game would’ve turned into if he remained at the studio.
