Xbox recently unveiled the Halo Combat Evolved Campaign Remake called Halo Campaign Evolved, and it is coming to Xbox, PC, and PS5 sometime in 2026. While this reveal wasn’t very mindblowing, it quickly drew criticism from fans and one ex-Halo developer. Fans accused the team of using AI during the development of the remake, and one ex-Halo dev criticized the gameplay reveal. The criticism about the gameplay reveal has to do with worth the developer did on the original title, with them saying “you aren’t supposed to be able to take the Warthog up to steamroll the Hunters.”

Ex-Halo Developer Criticizes Halo Campaign Evolved Gameplay

During the gameplay reveal for the Halo campaign remake, the developers showcased the beginning of the game. You may remember landing on the beach, exploring the area, and then running into two Hunters. If you were unprepared, these Hunters would be a menace to deal with, causing some major dismay and possibly ending your run. Now, they don’t seem to be an issue anymore, as you can simply ride a Warthog up to them.

As part of the gameplay reveal, the team showcased Master Chief riding up the hill that would normally be blocked by rocks and taking out the two Hunters in quick succession thanks to the turret on the back of the Warthog. One Ex-Halo developer saw this showcase, and they were unimpressed.

You aren’t supposed to be able to take the Warthog up to steamroll the Hunters. I intentionally placed rocks in the way so you had to fight them on foot. When you can just smash the crates out of the way it wrecks the encounters.

But the worst part? They put trees in the landing… https://t.co/m9xNFIBL7S

In a post on their X account, ex-Halo developer Jaime Griesemer stated, “You aren’t supposed to be able to take the Warhog up to steamroll the Hunters. I intentionally placed rocks in the way so you had to fight them on foot.” They went on to say, “When you can just smash the crates out of the way, it wrecks the encounters.”

In a later post, the developer stated, “On further analysis, I’m sure it’s because the vehicles take damage and so you’re just as likely to destroy the hog as get it over the rocks. If anything, that makes it -worse- because -none- of the vehicle tricks are going to work anymore.”

The Halo campaign remake does look strikingly different than the original, with some noticeable changes. It is strange to see such an iconic encounter able to be completed so quickly.
