Larian Studios held its promised AMA on the r/games subreddit this morning, going over many topics brought up by commenters. Among the questions answered, CEO Swen Vincke has confirmed that the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur’s Gate 3, will never come to Nintendo Switch 2. He said, “We would have loved to, but it wasn’t our decision to make.”
While that is definitely heartbreaking news for Switch 2 owners who would like to take the adventure with them on the go, the future looks bright. After releasing Divinity: Original Sin 2 on the hybrid console last month, Larian appears to be open-minded about the new Divinity coming to Switch 2 in the future, according to technical director Bert Van Semmertier.
Why Isn’t Baldur’s Gate 3 Coming to Switch 2?
So, if Larian wanted to bring Baldur’s Gate 3 to the Nintendo Switch 2, why isn’t it happening? Of course, we can only speak speculatively on this case, but it likely comes down to money, as most things do in the gaming industry. Wizards of the Coast could not have wanted to fund a port to the Switch 2, for whatever reason.
There are also reports that many third-party developers were unable to obtain access to Switch 2 developer kits for a prolonged period. Supposedly, those issues are taken care of these days, but for the last couple of years it definitely seems to have been a problem. By the time Larian could have gotten theirs, they had fully moved on from Baldur’s Gate 3 and focused on future projects.
While there is always the chance things could change, we would not necessarily bank on that. Vincke seems to imply that the Switch 2 could definitely handle Baldur’s Gate 3, and playing the game portably would be nice, but that’s the way things go.
