Borderlands 4 has been one of the most anticipated games of the year. After dealing with past releases being less than ideal, Gearbox needed a win for the series, and they got one in the reviews. Most review scores landed on either an 8 or 9, with the average score being 8.4. That is a solid comeback, and one that everyone was hoping for. Unfortunately, now that the public has their hands on the game, the reviews on Steam are not looking too good, with the game hitting mostly negative quickly, and then slowly rising to mixed reviews.

Borderlands 4 Hit With Performance Issues

Currently, Borderlands 4 has just under 6,000 reviews on Steam, with the reviews landing in the mixed category. Shortly after the game was released, it received mostly negative reviews. This is largely due to the game having poor performance on PC. Many worried about this being the case since Borderlands 4 was developed using Unreal Engine 5.

“Terrible optimization. Another Unreal Engine 5 casualty. Not worth buying in its current state unless you have a NASA PC,” one user said in their review. Another user said the performance is the “Worst [they’ve] ever seen.”

There are many users warning others not to buy the game if they don’t have at least an RTX3080 graphics card, as the game requires some demanding specs from your PC if you want it to run properly. The minimum specs listed on the Steam page are an Intel Core i7-9700 processor, RTX2070 graphics card, and 16GB of RAM. This is higher than normal for games of this era, but it is not unheard of. After all, games like Forspoken, which was released a few years back, also required some demanding specs.

From our experience, Borderlands 4 was running fine before the day-one patch. After the patch, the game started stuttering after fast traveling to a new location. Some streamers have also mentioned that the game now stutters when they summon a vehicle.
