From the iconic battles of World War 2 to the sun-soaked fields of ancient Japan, games have given players a window into hundreds of historical events and locations. Series like Assassin’s Creed have even built its entire identity around transporting the player to different historical time periods, though giving them a slight twist from reality, while others lean hard into historical accuracy.

As a medium, there’s no better way to really experience history than gaming. Reading a textbook or watching a documentary can only give you a narrow view of an event, while games can put you directly in the shoes of someone experiencing it. Again, not all games do so especially faithfully to life, but even they are worth discussing. That’s why we want to shine a light on those games that set themselves in the wide range of historical periods across all countries and cultures. Which ones do it well? Which do it wrong? Where have we yet to go, and what has been done to death? Let’s talk about it all!

Keep up with all things History Month by keeping an eye on our X page, and join our Discord to share your own thoughts on historical games, or anything else that comes to mind. Everyone and every perspective is welcome!

Editor in Chief/Team Cheerleader. I just want to spread the joys of gaming and all they're capable of as far as possible. This is a medium that I feel still has only begun to scratch the surface of what it is capable of, and I'm excited to be along for the ride.
