Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is one of the most anticipated games releasing in 2024 for the PS5. As such, there have been tons of questions surrounding the game as the release date grows ever closer day by day. With very little information being shared about the game prior to Summer Games Fest, many fans were wondering what the status of development was.
After a surprise trailer dropped, fans now have even more questions. Will the game be open world like the original? What is going on with Zack? Oh, and why is Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on two discs? We can’t answer those first two, but this guide will give you an answer to the latter question.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth – Why is it on two discs?
Simply put, the reason why Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth would need to be put on two discs is because of the insufficient amount of space on the PS5 Blu-ray disc. A standard PS5 Blu-ray disc can hold a little over 100GB of data. At most, a single disc can hold roughly 128GB. Since Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth requires two discs, it is because there is not enough data on a single disc to contain the game.
There are two routes that Square Enix could be going. First, they could be storing the game on an install disc. This would allow players to install the entire game with a single disc and then play it with the other. This was very common during the PS2 and PS3 eras with large games.
Second, both discs could have part of the game. This was another common tactic with large games on the PS2 and PS3. Both discs would have a piece of the game on them and you would need to switch discs after the first one played through all of its content.

How big is Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth?
Since Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth requires two discs, the download size of the game could be anywhere from 100GB to 256GB. Odds are the game won’t go over 200GB but hitting around 150 to 180 Gigabytes would not be surprising considering the size of the original game back in the day (relatively speaking, of course).
There hasn’t been any confirmation on the size of the game yet so this is all speculation. Keep in mind that this will be a large game so be prepared if you plan on downloading the game instead of purchasing the physical copy.
