After seven years, the follow-up to one of the most beloved indie games of all time is finally here, as Hollow Knight: Silksong has finally released. The feverish anticipation for this DLC-turned-sequel has rarely been seen to this degree, but does all that hype live up to a great game? After my first 3 hours with Hollow Knight: Silksong, it seems fairly clear to me that fans of this metroidvania will have their patience rewarded.

Smooth As Silk

Switching up the player character is one of the largest changes for Hollow Knight: Silksong, a decision that keeps things new and fresh for me as a returning fan. Hornet, the new playable character, feels fast, fluid, and agile compared to the Knight from the first game. It’s a playstyle I prefer in action games, and Hornet being so maneuverable and quick feels great to control in this new world. This translates well to the couple of boss battles I’ve seen this far, with her floaty jump, diagonal down slash attack, and collection of projectiles mixing up the combat and keeping me on my toes throughout every confrontation. Team Cherry was already a master at making a 2D soulslike feel challenging, and the feeling of overcoming the buggy enemies feels just as triumphant in the follow up.

A Dazzling Return

Another standout part of what Team Cherry has put together is the world in which Hornet adventures. Players will spend the game in the new region of Pharloom, an area filled with new foes and environments to explore. The hand-drawn style of Hollow Knight returns, with charming characters scattered around every corner. Whether it’s the merchants, the map salesman,  or even the fast travel beast, the world of Silksong is just as weird, captivating, and gorgeous as ever. Added to the impressive visuals is sound design that is just as intriguing. The sing-song language returns, but the score truly stands out, bringing a sense of wonder to a mysterious and dangerous new world.

Final Thoughts

Adding to the top-notch gameplay, the inclusion of a brand new quest system, as well as a return to this beautiful hand-drawn world brimming with mystery, I can confidently say that Hollow Knight Silksong has been worth the wait.
