It seems like Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Entertainment, just can’t seem to catch a break. It is almost like every post he makes must be met with criticism and strife. In his latest comment, Pitchford brought up the sale of Borderlands 3. Currently, the game is on sale on Steam for 95% off, making it dirt cheap for anyone who hasn’t already bought it and wants to get in on the franchise. Pitchford connected this sale to Borderlands 4, and fans are once again not happy.
Randy Pitchford Upsets Borderlands 4 Fans
Randy Pitchford has a knack for posting controversial statements that may end up hurting the sales of Borderlands 4. In his latest post, he spoke about Borderlands 3 being on sale. Currently, the game is 95% off on Steam, making it $3.00 for anyone who wants to pick it up. This type of sale happens pretty frequently for Borderlands 3 since it is around six years old.
In his post, Pitchford stated, “Sales like this and Borderlands 3 showing up on console subscription programs took over 5 years from the game’s launch to happen. Take advantage when it’s here! And to set expectations, it will be even longer before this kind of thing happens in the next cycle with Borderlands 4.”
Of course, this immediately reminded fans of the price controversy from earlier this year, where Pitchford stated that if someone is a “real fan,” they will “make it work.” For reference, Borderlands 3 was added to Game Pass in April 2025 and added as a free game on PlayStation Plus in July 2024.
One user commented, “You’re gonna get such a shock when B4 flops on launch. Plenty will play it in the following years when those sales come. On launch, it’s an incomplete game, with launch bugs and years of drip-feeding content. In 4 years it’s perfect, complete, and costs 10 bucks.” Many others brought up the spyware rumor from earlier this year, which was debunked.
Other fans told Randy that it is hard to follow him when he “spits out crap like this.” Many agree that Pitchford isn’t the best at marketing the game and should stick to a more silent role in the company.
