On December 11th Epic Games is looking to get into the hardcore esports scene with their recently unveiled Ballistic first-person shooter game mode. At its core this game mode is a competitive shooter which borrows elements from popular games within the space like Counter Strike 2 and VALORANT. And even though mode will be launching in early access it will come jam packed with content along with a ranked and unranked mode.

Each game of Ballistic will be split up in multiple rounds in this classic attackers vs. defenders structure. Attackers will need to carry rift point devices to one of two sites situated on the map and plant it while warding off the defending team. When you first spawn in you’ll be equipped with a ranger pistol and 800 credits that you will need to manage as the match unfolds. But as the match progresses you will be able to earn more credits by eliminating enemies and planting those rift point devices.

While this game mode is pretty vanilla as vanilla could be in the gaming world this is something that could bring a nice hardcore esports flair to fortnite that has been missing for many years. Plus, when you add in a  more select range of weapons available to the player this presents a nice balanced weapons system. Ballistic also draws inspiration from a game like VALORANT, where in the place of special abilities players can use ‘Flex Gadgets’ like a proximity mine, bubble shield, and recon grenade.

On paper this looks like a solid competitive offering for FPS fans. Not to mention this will be built into the core Fortnite experience which is already free-to-play and played by millions around the world. And while it’s only launching with just one map Epic Games has proved over the lifespan of Fornite itself content will be steadily churned out to keep things fresh and exciting. While Ballistic will still be an early access mode we could possibly be looking at another major evolution in the life cycle of Fornite and possibly a big player in the esports scene.
