It feels like everything is getting a movie adaptation lately and so it comes as no surprise to learn that Helldivers 2 is getting adapted to the big screen. While some were quick to voice their concern about a live-action version of their favorite game franchise, others said the movie doesn’t need to be made. This is because it already exists as another satirical sci-fi action comedy movie. The Helldivers movie will either be a strong spiritual successor or a blatant ripoff of this beloved movie. If you haven’t guessed it already, it’s Starship Troopers.

Helldivers 2 has received a lot of support since it was launched back in February 2024. Recently, the Helldivers 2 CCO talked about a possible “limited event” collaboration with the game’s enemies. He also shared that players will never have to worry about enemies or gameplay being behind a paywall.

Sony announces Helldivers movie adaptation that fans say already exists

At CES, Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions stated, “Looking ahead as to what might come next, I’m excited to announce we are working with Sony Pictures on developing a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2.” While this is exciting news for the franchise and Arrowhead Game Studios, many fans were apprehensive about the announcement.

Shortly after the announcement, DiscussingFilms posted about the announcement on its X page. Many fans, however, were quick to point out that the movie already exists and it’s called Starship Troopers – a cult-classic sci-fi action movie released in 1997. The widely popular movie undoubtedly inspired Helldivers 2 which sees soldiers battling robots and bugs in the name of managed democracy. The Starship Troopers book and movie are both a satirical critique of fascism and right-wing militarism.

The comments on various posts about the Helldivers movie are lined with comments talking about the existence of Starship Troopers. “Starship Troopers already exists though,” one user said. Another stated, “We are reaching levels of meta previously thought impossible,” with a gif from the Starship Troopers movie. One more user said, “Soooo… Starship Troopers remake?”

Others are not excited about the idea of the franchise being made into a movie. This is mainly because of the discussion of DEI and recent movie adaptations from various companies being worse than players have expected. One such movie that disappointed fans in recent months is the Borderlands adaptation. Luckily, Pilestedt, if he has control over how the movie turns out, has talked about his distaste for DEI and using media to make political statements.
