Following the shutdown of Concord and Firewalk Studios, PlayStation said it was still dedicated to the pursuit of developing live service games that players could love. We didn’t really doubt them, but a new job listing gives us little bits of info about an unannounced PlayStation comedic esports game that appears to be very early in development, and it may come to mobile devices alongside console and PC.
What is this unannounced comedic esports game from PlayStation?
The job listing is for a UX/UI (User Experience/User Interface) Design Lead, and while there is no mention of a project name or specific development team, there are some tidbits that we can take away from here. For starters, PlayStation is currently pretty well known for their serious single player games (outside of Astro Bot), but the job ad asks, “Would you like to work on something comedic with lighthearted and whimsical characters?” The game is also looking for someone who has experience in “building across a variety of platforms (PC, Console, Mobile)” and the “competitive gaming/esports landscape.”
While we have some base level explanations of what this game is, we also need to mention that it seems very much in the early days. The ad mentions working on the UX “from prototype to production” which sounds to us like they are still in the planning stages of what this game could look like. They supposedly want it to turn into a new franchise for PlayStation, so there appear to be big plans behind this project, and we can definitely rule out this being an Astro Bot game.
Whatever it is, it will be multiple years before we hear about this in an official sense, we’re talking PS6 kind of game here, and that’s if things go smoothly enough for it, in contrast to the many canceled PlayStation multiplayer games lately. Additionally, while they seem to want a light-hearted approach to the game, that could change as well during production. So many things can and will change with a game this early in its development.
