Gaming was already an expensive hobby, but recent price increases are making it more expensive. It all started with Nintendo, after the console-maker announced the Nintendo Switch 2 would retail for $450 and many of its games would be priced at $80. Next, Xbox joined in, announcing that the price of the Xbox Series X/S would be increasing. Luckily, many of the games have stayed at the price of previous years, which is $70. Now, Sony is officially joining in after announcing that the PlayStation 5 is receiving a price increase.
PlayStation 5 Price Increase Takes Effect
Sony has officially announced that the price of the PlayStation 5 will increase, and the increase takes effect today, August 21, 2025. The company cited the “challenging economic environment” as the reason. Via the PlayStation Blog, Vice President of Global Marketing Isabelle Tomatis stated, “We continue to navigate a challenging economic environment. As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21.”
The following price increases will take effect today for PlayStation 5 consoles in the US.
- PlayStation 5 – $549.99 (up from $499.99)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99 (up from $449.99)
- PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99 (up from $699.99)
Each version of the console has received a $50 increase from the previous prices, and as a result, many gamers are not happy. While this is the latter half of the PlayStation 5’s life cycle, it is still a shock to see the console’s price increase by such a large amount. Luckily, Sony also stated that the PlayStation 5 accessories prices will remain the same.
Of course, there is no guarantee that the accessory prices won’t increase in the future due to the fluctuating economy. Many of the price increases are also due to the tariffs placed on foreign goods by US President Donald Trump.
