When Among Us took over the internet during the pandemic, I was one of the many people that fell in love with it. During a time where everyone was locked inside, being able to lie to and manipulate your friends was a ton of fun. As time went on, the name Among Us grew and now is awaiting an animated series. Last year, a VR-only version of Among Us came out, but recently that version of the game was expanded to include PC players without a headset. Overall, Among Us 3D is more of the same, but I can’t push myself to really recommend it to anyone that already has the original 2D game.
Notable changes that don’t leave a mark

As someone who has put probably about 100 hours into Among Us over the last five years, seeing the Skeld from a first-person point of view is quite the experience for the first time. Running around the corridors of an environment I am quite familiar with, but from a different angle is a really cool selling point to me. I also appreciate Among Us 3D taking away the VR requirement. I can’t go ten minutes in a VR headset without getting sick, so there was absolutely no way I would have ever played this game without that change. Unfortunately, everything else that changes in this translation just isn’t that great.
One of the biggest things I noticed when looking into the game is that Among Us 3D has a built-in voice system. It’s proximity chat that doesn’t require you to install third-party software like with the regular game, which can be rather spotty. However, whenever I was hearing other players speak, they often sounded robotic and the quality was quite low.
Unreliable matchmaking

This game also has a quick match matchmaking system that seems quite finicky at best. You can still set up your own lobbies with a code to send to friends to join you, but if you are playing solo, you’re at the whim of what the game wants to set you up with. I was constantly being put in lobbies with a low amount of people and a lot of times it even was putting me in lobbies where the game already started so I had to wait for the entire match to end before I could actually do anything.
So far, there are only two modes in the game, Classic and Tag, which is essentially Hide and Seek, but instead of the Impostor killing the crewmates, they infect them and add to the ranks. It’s essentially like Infected from Halo. Even when I set my quick match search to only look for Tag games, the game was constantly putting me in Classic matches. My only guess is that not many people play Tag at all, because even when I finally got put into a Tag match, it lasted only seconds before people were dropping out.
Only play with friends

While Among Us kicked off the craze of social deduction games, there has always been a constant I have found with every single one of its copycats. These games are only fun when you have a full lobby of friends. Unfortunately, Among Us 3D doesn’t change that. A vast majority of my matches were filled with people I found quite aggravating to be around. Situations like kids that don’t listen to the argument side of the game and just vote for the first person that has their name brought up has always been one of the worst aspects of the community and completely takes away a large reason for playing the game in the first place.
I also had some lobbies where VR players just couldn’t believe I was playing on PC and there was some weird cult-like behavior around that. Then there’s the usual instance of players just screaming into their mic or other unnerving experiences with people I didn’t know that really made the game not enjoyable. Playing with randoms in Among Us 3D is as toxic of an experience as any other social dedication game.
Final verdict
Unless you have a group of friends that you trust to have a good time with, I can’t recommend playing Among Us 3D over the regular game. The player count seems to be quite minuscule compared to original, which makes sense considering there is no integration with console platforms here. Playing the game in first-person is really cool the first time, but you quickly see how you’re still playing the same game at the end of the day. I wish I knew other people that had the game so I could possibly have a better experience, but my time with Among Us 3D was nothing more than annoying and quite the waste of time spent hopping between lobbies just trying to find a decent game. I would say you’re much better off sticking with the 2D game over this.
