Sonic Adventure 2 is seeing a bit of a jump in players on Steam following the theatrical release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. According to SteamDB, the game reached an all-time high amount of players on Sunday at 1,061 concurrent users. That is the most players to be on the Steam version at one time since it was released on the platform in November 2012.

While a little over a thousand people isn’t going to reach anywhere near the heights of the highest activity on Steam, it is notable for a game that is a simple port of a Dreamcast game that was released over 20 years ago. Looking at the performance of the game on Steam shows it typically hovers in the 300-400 range outside of big Humble Bundle sales.

Needless to say, the crowd reaction to the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie has been making an impact on this game, at least. Other titles like Sonic x Shadow Generations haven’t seen a jump in players, which makes sense, considering the movie is more focused on events in Sonic Adventure 2. Unfortunately, the Shadow the Hedgehog game isn’t available on Steam, so we can’t know what kind of effect that title would be seeing right now.

While it’s nice to see more people playing Sonic Adventure 2 on Steam, we would be surprised if many of them are new players. The game is old, and while we have many fond memories of playing it growing up, there are quite a few issues with it we would like to see addressed in a possible remake. Regardless, the Sonic 3 movie, which made us very happy to watch over the weekend, is having a good impact on one of our favorite games growing up.
