Destiny 2 did not die gracefully, with many fans feeling the title’s sunsetting was rushed and ill-planned. At the time, many believed that Bungie would have plans to continue the series by making Destiny 3 or some spin-off title. Unfortunately, these rumors were quickly squashed, as reports started to come showing that Bungie and Sony have no plans to develop a future Destiny title. Instead, reports have stated that Sony is not open to the idea of funding a future title in the series.
Despite the last update for Destiny 2, titled Moment of Triumph, being rolled out on June 9, and some menial hotfixes following it, players are still clinging to the game. For a few months, a petition on Change.org has been shared, and it has now hit a new milestone, surpassing the Destiny 2 peak Steam player count.
Destiny 3 Petition Hits New Milestone
Shortly after Sony and Bungie announced the sunsetting of Destiny 2, a petition went live on Change.org with the hopes that the team would move on to create Destiny 3. That same petition has now hit over 400,000 signatures, surpassing the Steam peak player count of Destiny 2. In its heyday, Destiny 2 had peak player counts of around 316,000 players on Steam. Part of what makes this so astounding is that the petition now, theoretically, has over 400,000 unique, verified signatures.
Players have shown that they are still interested in Destiny 2, as there are still many jumping into the game daily. Destiny 2 is still getting 24-hour player count peaks on Steam of almost 60,000 players – a significant amount more than Bungie’s newest title, Marathon, which gets daily peaks on Steam of around 6,700 players.
Despite the impressive number of signatures, Sony and Bungie have not made any additional comments on the future of the Destiny franchise. It is unlikely that Destiny 3 will come to fruition, but it is clear that there are many players who are interested in seeing the franchise make a comeback.
What isn’t as clear is the future of Bungie, as Bungie was hit by massive layoffs, with the company losing around half of its employees. This will undoubtedly affect the future of the company and what projects it is capable of taking on.
