Is Lords of the Fallen a true soulslike game? You might remember the original game that was released back in 2014. The original game, while decent, hardly merited the label of soulslike thanks to its poor movement and lackluster combat. The new title seems to be looking to fix this issue.

The term “souls-like” has been tossed around a lot whenever an action RPG follows a certain style that was pioneered by Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls many years ago. Now, people like to use the label a lot to mean any game that has a sword and a shield. Is Lords of the Fallen a souls-like game? Not everything falls under this specific genre subset.

Lords of the Fallen – Is it a soulslike game?

Yes. The new Lords of the Fallen is very much a soulslike game and there are many who are saying it is the true definition of a next-gen soulslike game. Taking a look at trailers and gameplay footage, you can easily draw many comparisons between Lords of the Fallen and the Dark Souls series.

There are some mechanics and features that set Lords of the Fallen apart from the standard soulslike experience. For instance, the combat, while similar, has a fluidity to it that allows you to swamp stances during combat. You can also chain magic into your attacks.

Other mechanics that set Lords of the Fallen apart from the traditional soulslike include the Soul Flay ability which allows you to rip the soul out of an enemy and throw them. This ability can be utilized frequently in the game and it is a way to get the upper hand.

In terms of general gameplay, Lords of the Fallen is very similar to what you would expect a true Dark Souls-style game to be like. There are plenty of difficult challenges, massive bosses that will make you retry again and again, as well as a myriad of weapons to customize how you play the game.
